Activities & Tourist Attractions in Leon, Guanajuato

  • Walk in the streets of the city downtown and stop by to admire the amazing façade of the Cathedral, a magnificent construction built in 1746 by the Jesuit friars. Nowadays, this imposing building holds the miraculous image of the Virgen de la Luz, whom hundreds of people-local and from outside the area- dedicate numerous celebrations and pilgrimages in the tear. You can’t stop visiting this beautiful temple!

  • Near the Cathedral is the Plaza Fundadores, where according to the tradition there was a cemetery that, once it was shot down, was turned into a small plaza that has become an emblematic spot of the city. At the west side of the plaza you’ll find a plaque with the names of the first people in town. Don’t forget to take a picture right next to the beautiful fountain that commemorates the fourth centennial of the foundation of Leon, decorated with bronze lions that seem to protect, in a sober yet fierce way, the major pile of this place.

  • Buy shoes and all kind of leather articles in the main markets and plazas. We suggest visiting the Plaza del Zapato, the Galeria del Zapato, Plaza Piel, among other shopping malls located in the east side and at the Zona Piel of the city.

  • Visit Guanajuato’s Museum of Art and History. Located in the modern facilities of the Forum Cultural Guanajuato, in this precinct are exposed great art and regional cultural collections, as well as a fantastic series of small and big sculptures arranged in three levels for a better appreciation. A tour around this spacious museum will let you know an unexplored side of the ancient and modern art of Guanajuato.

  • Taste an exquisite Guacamaya, a sort of torta filled with chicharron and salsa that is a true delight even for the most discerning palates. You can find this dish in pretty much every corner of the city. There are people that say that “going to Leon without buying shoes or eating a good Guacamaya, is like not going at all”.

  • Visit the Zooleon, the city zoo park with over 1,200 animals of 180 different species. This is a place where specialists have managed to incentivize the reproduction of turkeys, mexican wolves, real eagles, and other endangered species. A total success for mexican biology and zootechnics, this fantastic place, ideal to be visited with the family, is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00 hours.

  • For those who love religious architecture we suggest visiting the Templo Expiatiorio, located in the Madero street within the downtown area. Its stupendous design of neo-gothic style will remind you of the famous cathedrals of medieval Europe, with enormous stained glass windows that show the Misterios de la Salvation, as well as the shields of the city of Leon and the state of Guanajuato. Be surprised with this magnificent place built in 1921.

  • If you like soccer, don’t miss one of the games of the Leon’s “Panzas Verdes”, the historic team of the city. Its incredible stadium, the “Nou Camp”, world cup scenery in Mexico 1986, owes its name to the mythical venue where the Spain’s F.C. Barcelona plays.

  • In November, at the facilities of the Metropolitan Park, one of the most awaited events of the year takes place: the Balloon Festival. If you’re a fan of this activity or you just like to take pictures, this is the best scenery to get the most colorful images…imagine over 200 balloons flying the city at night! You’ll become an addict of every edition of the FIG.

  • Visit the state’s capital (Guanajuato is located about 30 minutes from the city of Leon) and enjoy its historical and beautiful colonial buildings. During this visit, don’t miss the chance of knowing one of the most famous icons of the region: the Cristo Rey del Cubilete, an imposing sculpture of over 20 meters with its sanctuary, ideal to welcome thousands of tourists 365 days a year in a comfortable and safe way.
